Analytical Scientist
CREW Carbon
About the Role
CREW Carbon is seeking a highly motivated Analytical Scientist to lead lab and field-based operations and research. This will involve the generation, instrumental analysis, and rapid interpretation of results to optimize our carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technology. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in both the lab and the field—someone who can run and optimize experiments, analyze data quickly, and isn’t afraid to get their hands dirty in the field. You will play a critical role in refining CREW’s enhanced weathering process in wastewater by generating and interpreting high-quality data, supporting system optimization, and ensuring rigorous biogeochemical analysis.
This is a hands-on role, requiring the initiative to take ownership of projects, drive experiments forward, and provide rapid insights that help scale our technology.
Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Research & Instrumentation:
- Design, execute, and refine lab experiments to analyze carbonate chemistry, alkalinity, mass balance, and geochemical reactions.
- Run and maintain analytical instruments (e.g., ICP-MS, IC, TOC analyzers, spectrophotometers) for high-precision chemical measurements.
Field Work & System Optimization:
- Conduct on-site sampling and in-field measurements under varying environmental conditions.
- Analyze and troubleshoot real-time field data to optimize system performance.
- Support technology deployments at partner sites, working closely with engineers and operations teams.
Data Analysis & Process Improvement:
- Rapidly interpret lab and field data to improve system efficiency.
- Use biogeochemical principles to refine CREW’s enhanced weathering methodology.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Work closely with scientists, engineers, and project managers to ensure seamless integration of lab and field insights.
- Communicate findings clearly through reports, presentations, and technical documentation.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years experience in Geochemistry, Biogeochemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
- Proficiency in data analysis, statistical analysis, mass balance modeling, and associated visualizations to interpret experimental and field data effectively (e.g., Python, R, Matlab).
- Expertise in carbonate chemistry, biogeochemistry, and time-series data analysis.
- Hands-on experience operating and maintaining laboratory instrumentation for chemical analysis.
- Strong willingness to work in the field under demanding conditions and adapt quickly to new environments.
- Ability to take initiative and be the first to raise a hand to solve problems and lead analytical efforts.
Bonus Qualifications
- PhD (or MS) in Geochemistry, Biogeochemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience deploying and testing environmental technologies in real-world settings.
- Background in startup environments or early-stage technology development.
- Proficiency in geochemical modeling tools (e.g., PHREEQC, Geochemist’s Workbench, Python, Matlab).
Compensation
The annual salary range for this position is competitive and will depend on many factors including experience, education, and expertise. We offer a competitive benefits package with insurance, vacation, retirement, and equity options.
