The Position

East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) has nine (9) openings and invites candidates who have the appropriate qualifications to apply for these intern positions (part-time, approximately 19 hours per week when school is in session, or full time on school breaks) in the following areas:

• Wastewater Process & Asset Management

• Civil/Structural Section of the Design Division

• Construction Management Section of the Construction Division

• Design Project Management Section of the Design Division

• Facilities Engineering Section of the Engineering Services Division

• Major Facilities Section of the Water Distribution Planning Division

• Pipeline Rebuild Section of the Pipeline Infrastructure Division

• Water Supply Improvements Section/Division

• Electrical / Industrial Control Systems Engineering of the Design Division

The Engineering Aide will assist professional engineering and technical personnel by performing the following typical tasks:

All Engineering Aides:

• Using PCs for preparing reports, memos, graphics, and databases. Established experience with Microsoft software suite is required. Experience with AutoCAD, Visio, or SketchUp is desirable, but not required for all positions.

• Presenting project findings and results (technical and non-technical) to management and other EBMUD staff.

• Assisting with meeting coordination, including scheduling, preparing meeting agendas and presentation materials, and recording meeting minutes.

• Assisting with tracking project budgets.

Wastewater Process & Asset Management Engineering Aide:

• Compiling and evaluating water quality data.

• Performing wastewater laboratory analyses.

• Gathering field data at treatment facilities.

• Performing statistical analysis on water quality parameters and treatment plant operations.

Civil/Structural Engineering Aide

• Assisting in the design of pumping plants and reservoir structures, including foundations, anchorage

systems, and site drainage.

• Supporting the Project Engineer with site visits and field data collection.

• Reviewing construction submittals and marking up contract and as-built drawings.

• Assisting with preliminary cost estimation and life cycle evaluation of various structural systems.

Construction Management Engineering Aide

• Assisting the Construction Manager or Resident Engineer with field investigation and providing coordination for field activities, materials testing, and survey requests.

• Assisting the Construction Manager in review of cost proposals and developing independent cost estimates.

• Supporting the management and updates of project tracking spreadsheets such as the schedule of submittal updates, change order log, daily extra work reports, and safety and environmental compliance.

• Compiling and verifying information to review accuracy of as-built drawings, construction schedule updates, schedule of submittals, and payment requests.

Design Project Management Engineering Aide

• Assisting in the preparation and reviewing of engineering drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and reports for water infrastructure improvement projects (e.g., water treatment plants, pumping plants, reservoirs, regulators, rate control stations).

• Providing technical and administrative support for capital improvement programs related to water distribution facilities, including developing plans, specifications, and contract documents.

• Helping track project budgets, schedules, and scopes of work; preparing and maintaining technical documents, spreadsheets, and correspondence; under the direction of project managers or supervisors.

• Participating in project meetings, taking notes, and assisting in coordinating project information among EBMUD workgroups, and reviewing consultant-prepared plans and specifications for consistency and compliance.

Facilities Engineering Aide

• Conducting field investigations and measurements, including assessments and documentation of existing facility conditions.

• Researching construction products and materials, evaluating applicability, performance, cost, maintenance requirements, and alternative options, including coordination with vendors to obtain product and material samples.

• Using computer software such as AutoCAD, develops schematic design of office and facility interior workspaces after meeting with District employees to clarify scope of work and to understand operational needs of work unit.

• Coordinating with District trades workers and outside contractors for implementing workspace improvements.

Major Facilities/Water Distribution Planning Engineering Aide

• Hydraulic modeling to determine available flow and pressure within the water distribution system in response to customer requests.

• Reviewing and responding to outside agency CEQA documents.

• Reviewing and recommending pipeline replacement sizing.

Pipeline Rebuild Engineering Aide

• Assisting in the evaluation and analysis of leaks within the water distribution system.

• Supporting project initiation activities through the District’s Infrastructure Project Tracker application and assisting project managers on work plans, material recommendation memos, Request for Proposals (RFPs), and facilitating requests for surveys and planning reviews.

• Providing support on the design of pipeline replacement projects including material procurement, job walks, and engineering drawing preparation.

• Providing support on the update of the District’s Pipeline Replacement Risk model including reviewing likelihood of failure and consequence of failure categories and scoring criteria

Water Supply Improvements Engineering Aide

• Assisting in the planning and implementation of recycled water projects including providing engineering support of operating recycled water projects and assisting with purified water education.

• Assisting with recycled water customer site conversions, including plan review and site inspections and meeting with customers to discuss potential recycled water uses.

• Compiling and evaluating recycled water usage data.

• Assisting with recycled water pipeline and pump station design/construction projects.

Electrical/Industrial Control Systems Engineering Aide

• Assisting in the electrical design of pumping plants, reservoirs, and water treatment plants.

• Performing electrical calculations and analysis using software tools.

• Preparing engineering drawings and specifications and cost benefit analyses using engineering economics.

• Developing and testing control system applications.

Requirements

1. Completion of the twelfth grade, or its equivalent; and,

2a. Current enrollment in an undergraduate level accredited engineering or related technical degree program, with completion of at least 60 semester units (90 quarter units); OR

2b. Current enrollment in a graduate level accredited engineering or related technical degree program; OR,

2c. Recent completion (within 12 months) of an undergraduate or graduate level accredited engineering or related technical degree program.

The ideal candidate will have:

• An excellent command of spoken and written English to assist with technical reports, meeting notes, and project correspondence.

• Strong organizational skills, with the ability to assist in managing project schedules, budgets, and tasks.

• The ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment while demonstrating attention to detail, accuracy, and adherence to project specifications.

• Teamwork experience, with the ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, designers, and trades people.

• General computer skills including MS Excel, MS Word, MS Project, MS PowerPoint and Adobe.

• Understanding of project management principles, engineering economics, and/or statistics.

• Experience with computer programming, CAD and/or GIS.

• Prior coursework in water quality engineering.
