The Position

East Bay Municipal Utility District’s (EBMUD’s) Design Division, part of the Engineering and Construction Department, is seeking an Associate Mechanical Engineer who is motivated, energetic, a team player, a strong technical engineer, and experienced with working on a variety of professional mechanical/process engineering assignments. Reporting to a Senior Engineer, Associate Mechanical Engineer is the registered professional engineer level position on the EBMUD engineering career ladder. The current opening is in the department’s Design Division. The Associate Mechanical Engineer will be assigned to work in the Mechanical and Instrumentation Engineering group. Projects include mechanical systems and process systems in water treatment plants, distribution pumping plants, reservoirs, pressure regulators, flow control stations, building plumbing and HVAC, pipelines, and hydropower plants. Major performance areas include:
Mechanical and Process Design: Conducting site investigations, collaborating with clients, preparing mechanical and process design drawings (e.g., pumps, piping, valves, chemical systems, mechanical equipment) and specifications, and performing engineering analyses.
Computer Software Applications: Using and applying computer software tools in the performance of a variety of engineering activities ranging from hands on 3D and 2D computer-aided design to project scheduling and spreadsheet-based economic analyses and hydraulic modeling.
Technical Support: Responding to verbal and written requests for engineering field inspections and evaluations as well as mechanical and process engineering calculations (e.g., hydraulic analysis, pump sizing, valve sizing, ventilation). Providing technical support to other departments and engineers and reviewing contractor and vendor document submittals.
Project Planning and Management: Identifying project objectives, scope, cost estimates, feasibility, justifications, milestones, and completion schedule; coordinating resources and preparing supporting documentation.
Written Communication: Preparing memos, letters, and engineering reports designed to address a variety of audiences including EBMUD engineering, operations and maintenance staff, public agencies, government bodies, and members of the general public.
Oral Communication: Conducting and participating in meetings; and presenting papers, proposals, reports, and recommendations to a wide variety of audiences including EBMUD engineering, operations and maintenance staff, public agencies, government bodies, professional organizations, and members of the general public.
The ideal candidate will have technical design project engineering experience including planning, budgeting, scheduling, project development and control, interdisciplinary coordination, and hands-on design (including 3D/2D CAD), selection and specification of process equipment related to water or wastewater treatment and distribution or other industries (such as industrial, power, petroleum or chemical) which use process equipment or facilities. The ideal candidate must work well in a multidisciplinary team design environment, construction, and maintenance support, and will demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
Flexible/hybrid work from home schedule after 12 months may be available for some positions in this job classification.
The salary range is $12,842 per month increasing to $13,484, $14,158, $14,866 and $15,609) after 6, 18, 30, and 42 months, respectively.

Requirements

1. A bachelor’s degree in an ABET-accredited mechanical or related engineering curriculum, or a California EIT certificate;
2. Four years of professional mechanical and related engineering experience (subsequent to obtaining the degree), which is equivalent to two years of experience at EBMUD’s Assistant Mechanical Engineer level; and
3. California registration as a Professional Mechanical Engineer. Must possess a valid California driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record.
4. Must possess physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the job including physical agility to inspect job sites and equipment as required. Must be willing to work overtime as needed.

The Selection Process

1. Submit a completed EBMUD application and the required supplemental question responses online at www.ebmud.com by 4:30 p.m., Friday, January 23, 2026. Only application materials submitted online during the filing period will be accepted.
2. Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test part in order to advance to the next step in the selection process.
3. All qualified applications and supplemental responses will be competitively evaluated, with those candidates receiving a passing score to be invited to a panel interview tentatively scheduled for February 2026.
4. Successful candidates will be placed on the hiring list, based on rank, for further consideration to fill the current regular vacancy, as well as others occurring over the next 12 to 24 months.
5. The probation period for this position is 12 months. For those holding civil service status the probation period is 6 months.
6. All employment offers are conditional, pending the results of a Live Scan background screening. All selected finalists must participate in the Live Scan background screening process to remain in consideration for EBMUD employment.
