The Position

THIS RECRUITMENT IS LIMITED TO CURRENT STUDENTS AT CAL STATE UNIVERSITY EAST BAY

East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) has one (1) Student Intern position (part-time, approximately 19 hours per week when school is in session, or full time on school breaks) in the Water Conservation Department.

EBMUD, headquartered in Oakland, is an environmentally and socially progressive, publicly owned utility providing drinking water service to approximately 1.4 million customers in 20 cities and 16 unincorporated communities in portions of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties, and wastewater treatment services for more than 740,000 customers in the East Bay.

Water Conservation Division

The Water Conservation Division aims to achieve water efficiency and supply reliability within the EBMUD community through customer support, community education and outreach, conservation research, and the application of innovative practices and technologies.

Water Conservation Internship Role Description

The Student Intern will support the Water Conservation Division through data-driven analysis of water efficiency programs and/or support marketing and outreach campaigns. Projects may include creating marketing content and outreach collateral, Geographic Information System (GIS)-based analysis, and internal program evaluation. This is a hybrid role based at EBMUD’s downtown Oakland office, with some telecommuting possible. The preferred schedule is full-time during summer, with the option to continue part-time during the school year, depending on the selected candidate’s availability.

Project assignments will be completed under the direction of District staff and will be tailored to the intern’s skills and interests to support broader Water Conservation Division goals and programs. Potential assignments may include:

• Reviewing spatial data and conducting GIS analyses of landscapes

• Supporting quantitative analyses to estimate water savings across conservation programs

• Performing GIS-based gap and equity analyses

• Analyzing Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) data for leak detection and consumption trends

• Researching water conservation practices and engagement strategies

• Creating marketing and outreach content for social media, public events, educational webinars, etc.

• Providing general support for water conservation programs

Ideal Candidate Skills

The following skills are desirable, not required:

• Experience with GIS tools (e.g., ESRI ArcGIS), spatial analysis, and basic data analysis

• Proficiency in Excel, Python, SQL, and Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)

• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in teams

• Excellent organization, attention to detail, and basic project management skills (e.g., task tracking, meeting deadlines)

• Experience with photo or video editing skills, social media, content creation, graphic design (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Canva)

Requirements

Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience, which has led to the acquisition of the knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated above. Typical ways of acquiring these knowledge, skills, and abilities are either:

1. Current enrollment in a four-year college with junior standing or higher with a major related to the available position assignment(s); or,

2. Current enrollment in a graduate degree program related to the available position assignment(s); or,

3. Recent (within 12 months) graduation from a four-year college with a degree related to the available position assignment(s).

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Office environment utilizing a computer

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:

• Must possess physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the job, including sitting, standing, or bending for prolonged periods of time.
