The Position
-
Advance your career as a Mechanical Engineer with the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD), an industry leading water and wastewater utility. The ideal candidate to fill an immediate vacancy in the Plant Engineering Services Section of the Operations and Maintenance Department will have strong organizational skills, excellent communication skills, the motivation and ability to learn, and project management experience. Duties include:
Asset and Maintenance Program Engineering Support in a Collaborative Team Environment:
Working closely with electrical, mechanical, and control system maintenance personnel to identify and define preventive maintenance tasks. Managing consultant contracts to provide operations and maintenance documentation in a timely manner to support preventive maintenance tasks. Working closely with information system support analysts to update asset management and maintenance scheduling system software with new assets, maintenance plans, and procedures.
Maintenance and Operations Engineering Support:
Providing engineering support to water operations, electrical, mechanical, and control system maintenance personnel. Working closely with maintenance personnel to investigate, prioritize, and define equipment replacement while planning repair projects in conjunction with challenging operational restrictions and requirements. Providing lessons learned during equipment replacement to Design Division during design reviews and coordination meetings.
Project Management:
Overseeing, prioritizing, and managing the implementation of projects and programs supported by the section. Using schedules, financial information systems, and other work management systems to monitor project progress. Defining the need for and managing consultant contracts to accomplish program goals. Providing leadership in identifying and engaging staff across multiple EBMUD departments to support project goals.
Written Communication:
Preparing concise and accurate engineering reports, presentations, correspondence and memoranda for a wide variety of audiences including EBMUD staff, government and regulatory agencies, contractors, and the general public.
The salary range is $13,124 per month increasing to $13,780, $14,469, $15,192, and $15,952 after 6, 18, 30, and 42 months, respectively.
Flexible/hybrid work from home schedule may be available for some positions in this job classification.

Requirements

Any combination of education and experience that has led to the acquisition of the knowledge and abilities indicated above. Typical means of acquiring the essential knowledge and abilities is a combination of training and experience equivalent to:
1. Bachelor’s degree in an ABET-accredited mechanical or a closely related engineering curriculum OR a California EIT Certificate;
2. Four years of professional mechanical or closely related engineering experience (subsequent to obtaining the degree); AND
3. California registration as a Professional Mechanical Engineer.
Other requirements:
• A valid California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
• Willingness to work overtime when needed.
• Possession of the physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the position including both office and field duties.

The Selection Process

1. Submit a completed EBMUD application and the required supplemental question responses online at www.ebmud.com by 4:30 p.m., Friday, July 24, 2026. Only application materials submitted online during the filing period will be accepted.
2. Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test part in order to advance to the next step in the selection process.
3. All qualified applications and supplemental responses will be competitively evaluated, with those candidates receiving a passing score to be invited to a panel interview tentatively scheduled for August or September 2026.
4. Successful candidates will be placed on the hiring list, based on rank, for further consideration to fill the current regular vacancy, as well as others occurring over the next 12 to 24 months.
5. The probation period for this position is 12 months. For those holding civil service status the probation period is 6 months.
