Job Summary

The Material Handler/Loader is responsible for the safe and efficient handling, loading, unloading, packaging, and documentation of raw materials and finished products. This role supports plant operations through equipment operation, process monitoring, and adherence to safety, quality, and regulatory standards.

The ideal candidate is safety-focused, detail-oriented, and capable of working both independently and collaboratively while contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Material Handling & Loading Operations

  • Safely load and unload bulk tanker trucks, railcars, totes, and drums.
  • Package, label, and prepare finished products according to established specifications.
  • Handle and transport raw materials and chemicals in accordance with safety guidelines.
  • Operate forklifts and other material handling equipment (certification required).
  • Offload empty containers and assist with staging and storage of materials.

Documentation & Quality Control

  • Accurately complete and maintain required documentation, including Bills of Lading, Certificates of Compliance, batch records, and packaging counts.
  • Record process data and maintain production logs.
  • Collect and manage retain samples for quality testing and storage.
  • Ensure all work meets company quality standards and regulatory requirements.

Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere to all plant safety policies, OSHA regulations, and environmental standards.
  • Properly use and maintain required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Follow established procedures for handling hazardous materials.
  • Conduct routine safety audits, inspections, and housekeeping checks of work areas and equipment.
  • Immediately report safety hazards, incidents, or equipment deficiencies.

Equipment, Operation & Maintenance

  • Perform daily inspections of forklifts and plant equipment.
  • Report maintenance issues and submit work requests as needed.
  • Assist with cleaning and maintenance of equipment, including tanks and loading systems.
  • Maintain cleanliness of work areas, including loading zones and processing equipment.

Process Improvement & Operations Support

  • Support plant operations through general labor and cross-functional assistance.
  • Collaborate with supervisors and team members to identify and implement process improvements.
  • Assist with troubleshooting operational issues and improving workflow efficiency.
  • Communicate effectively across shifts to ensure continuity of operations.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Work overtime and flexible shifts, including weekends, as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support business objectives.

Qualifications

Required

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum 6 months of experience in material handling, warehouse operations, or manufacturing.
  • Forklift certification required (or ability to obtain within 14–30 days of hire).
  • Ability to safely handle chemicals and operate basic plant equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred

  • Experience in chemical, pharmaceutical, or food manufacturing environments.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations, safety standards, and environmental compliance.
  • Mechanical aptitude and familiarity with loading/unloading systems.
  • Prior training in material handling or equipment maintenance.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Ability to lift 50–75 lbs. regularly throughout the shift.
  • Ability to stand and remain active for 60–90% of the shift.
  • Capable of working in physically demanding conditions, including:
    • Confined spaces
    • Elevated platforms and ladders
    • Hot, dusty, and variable indoor/outdoor environments
  • Ability to perform tasks such as bending, climbing, sweeping, and shoveling.
  • Willingness to work in varying weather conditions and plant environments.
